Are you stoked or indifferent toward a My Chemical Romance reunion?

No. It wasn’t a dream. It actually happened. As of Halloween 2019, the world now knows for sure that My Chemical Romance is coming back. The band launched an official Instagram page, complete with one post and an ominous phrase: “Like Phantoms Forever…” What does it mean? Well, it means the men behind the Black Parade are (finally) reuniting for their first show in forever. Some are stoked; others meh. Which are you?

It’s been six long years since My Chemical Romance broke up, causing eyeliner streaks and sad hair flips by emo kids worldwide. Since then, the band has posted similarly vague posts hinting at a reunion, only for us to discover it was just some plain ol' anniversary album getting released. But now it’s happening, guys, it’s really happening!

Some of you out there might be pretty stoked, sure. My Chemical Romance was middle school and high school for you. Lots of nostalgic feelings have undoubtedly arisen. There’s no way that the band made an official Instagram page, announced the reunion show at the same time, and aren’t going on a greater tour or releasing new music. If they are playing us like that then, by God, we’ll finally side with Bert McCracken.

We’re not okay. My Chemical Romance is done and over. Bringing back the gang and doing a full-blown reunion is like trying to fully reconstruct a Roman ruin: It's not the same, and has an artificial cheapness to it. The band knew what they were doing when they broke up. Coming back together fails to preserve the fond memories we have of them.

After breaking our hearts back in 2013 and saying that “[My Chemical Romance] can never die,” it feels almost desperate for My Chemical Romance to get back together now. They're going against their original essence and doing exactly what every other washed-up band is doing. And really...does anyone want to be like Mick Jagger and tour well into their graves? Keep My Chem pure, and leave it as it was.
