Scariest movie monster: Michael Myers or Ghostface?

It's October and that means it's time to resurrect our Monster Madness bracket. Michael Myers is the epitome of a serial killer; he laid out the blood-print for future horror movie monsters to follow. Ghostface is directly inspired by Michael, but the meta set of serial killers redefined how to terrorize their victims. Michael and Ghostface have horrified us for years with their simple sharp knife as their weapon of choice. Which movie monster is scarier?

Just like a classic movie monster, our Monster Madness bracket is back and bigger than ever. We're pitting 16 heavyweight champions of horror against each other all month long, and you decide who wins the grand prize! Last year, Chucky ran away with the whole thing, toppling Freddy Krueger, Pinhead, and Michael Myers for the crown of scariest horror icon ever.

But this year, it's anyone's game—with new contestants Jigsaw, Pennywise, the Babadook and Norman Bates eyeing the haunted throne. Don't forget to cast your vote in our other head-to-head brawls below, and may the scariest monster win! 👻 🎃 😱

Michael Myers, also known as "the Shape" and the Boogeyman, was created by "Halloween" director and horror master John Carpenter. "Halloween" paved the way for future slasher horror films, creating a finely-tuned formula many have followed. The virgin lives, but her sexually active, drug-using friends die upon being stalked by an unstoppable serial killer. "Halloween" has grossed more than $308 million domestically at the box office.

Michael murdered his 17-year-old sister on Halloween when he was a young child. Michael Myers broke out of a mental institution 15 years later to terrorize a babysitter and her friends on Halloween. (Later sequels added more context to the killing spree: Laurie Strode, the babysitter, was actually his estranged sister.)

Dr. Loomis said it best—there was pure evil behind Michael's eyes, and he wasn't joking. Michael Myers has butchered many over the years with his simple weapon of choice. The horror icon popularized the "silent, but deadly" persona before Jason Voorhees was even a twinkle in Pamela Voorhees' eyes.

Ghostface is unique, as the name is more of a horror moniker than actual monster. Many serial killers have donned the Ghostface mask in the "Scream" franchise, but there's nothing like the original. Ghostface was created by horror icon Wes Craven, first appearing in the seminal 1996 horror film "Scream."

"Scream" was inspired by "New Nightmare," which took a more meta approach to the genre; it was a horror movie within a horror movie. Craven decided to take it to the next level with "Scream." The meta series deconstructed the horror genre, framing the rules for surviving—as well as the motivations of the killer. The franchise has grossed more than $604 million worldwide, making the "Scream" series among the most successful in the genre.

In the original film, Billy Loomis and Stuart "Stu" Macher use scary movie tropes to kill their friends and exact revenge on Sidney Prescott, whose mother ruins Macher's family after an adulterous affair with his father. Still, Ghostface wouldn't die. Instead of the same monster coming back to life in film after film, new killers try to off Sidney in every film.

Rather than a single killer, it's the legend of Ghostface that will never die.
