Roman poet and exile Ovid utilized the concept of transformation as a frame in which to recount the scope of classical mythology. All told, it contains more than 250 mythical stories, all recounted in a flowing lyricism that moves seamlessly from one tale to another. It is largely through Ovid that stories of the Minotaur, Perseus, Pygmalion and others became so well known to future generations. His influence on the literary imagination is especially clear in Shakespeare. The Bard drew heavily upon Ovid for “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “Romeo and Juliet,” and “The Tempest."

P.S. "Metamorphoses" is not the one about turning into a bug.

Though not as well known outside of Asia, “Journey to the West” is one of the most popular epics in Chinese history, and is beloved in many adaptations in other Asian countries. Author Wu Cheng’en adapted the real-life account of Chinese Buddhist monk Xuanzang’s perilous trip to India and mixed in heavily metaphoric fantastical tales and characters. The most famous of these is the chaotic and comedic monkey king, Sun Wukong. Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian elements fuse in what is both a reverent and satirical way that has delighted readers for centuries. It’s also the basis for what became "Dragon Ball Z."
