Louis C.K. is in hot water after joking about Parkland shooting survivors. In a recent stand-up routine, the comedian mocked the students who survived the mass shooting at a Florida high school in February 2018. Comedians are expected to joke about current events and are encouraged to use their freedom of speech. But some critics argue some jokes are in poor taste and should be off limits. Should we all lighten up?
Do people need a better sense of humor?
Ricky Gervais came to the defense of comedians who receive backlash for their comedy. The comedian took to Twitter to share his thoughts:
“Please stop saying ‘You can’t joke about anything anymore.’ You can,” Gervais wrote. “You can joke about whatever the f**k you like. And some people won’t like it and they will tell you they don’t like it. And then it’s up to you whether you give a f**k or not. And so on. It’s a good system.”
According to The Guardian, some jokes are off limits. The publication composed a list of topics some say should be off limits such as the Holocaust, September 11 and suicide.
