Kristen Stewart took off her shoes at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. The festival is known for its strict dress code and has garnered media attention in the past for turning away women for not wearing heels. Men and women are required to wear full gala attire, which typically includes tuxedos for men and gowns for women. As Stewart approached a set of stairs on the red carpet, she removed her black Christian Louboutins and carried them in her hands. Is Cannes sexist?

Stewart told The Hollywood Reporter women wearing heels at the Cannes Film Festival is an unwritten rule.

“There’s definitely a distinct dress code, right?” she said. “People get really upset at you if you don’t wear heels, or whatever. But you can’t ask people that anymore. It’s kind of a given. Like, if you’re not asking guys to wear heels and a dress, you cannot ask me either.”

According to Screen Daily in 2015, a group of older women were turned away from the festival for not wearing heels.

However, in a bad PR move for the push for gender equality, a handful of women in their 50’s were turned away from the screening of Todd Haynes’ competition entry Carol [the film’s feminist appeal further ironising the shut-out] on Sunday night after being told the height of their smart footwear didn’t pass muster.
Multiple guests, some older with medical conditions, were denied access to the anticipated world-premiere screening for wearing rhinestone flats.

According to Screen Daily in 2015, a festival representative released a statement about the strict dress code:

“Regarding the dress code for the red carpet screenings, rules have not changed throughout the years (Tuxedo, formal dress for Gala screenings) and there is no specific mention about the height of the women’s heels as well as for men’s. Thus, in order to make sure that this rule is respected, the festival’s hosts and hostesses were reminded of it.”
