Is it disrespectful to recognize 'Get Out' as a comedy?

Jordan Peele's "Get Out" is nominated for Best Motion Picture—Musical or Comedy and Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture—Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes, and the Internet ain't having it. Critics argue the horror-thriller satire speaks to racism and white supremacy that black people face in America, and there's nothing funny about that. Others say "Get Out" is technically a satirical dark comedy too. It's not unfair to label it as such. What do you think?

Below is the synopsis of "Get Out," per IMDB.

It's time for a young African American to meet with his white girlfriend's parents for a weekend in their secluded estate in the woods, but before long, the friendly and polite ambience will give way to a nightmare.

Moviegoers and critics alike raved about the film. It got a near perfect fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed $253 million at the global box office. To many, the film is a serious horror/thriller/drama, but to others, it's a satirical dark comedy with a heavy dose of social commentary.

"Get Out" is now nominated for two awards in the musical/comedy categories at the Golden Globes. The film is actually both dramatic and comedic in certain instances, but should the film be categorized as a comedy for awards?

Ha! Even Jordan acknowledged that his film is real life.

But Peele is also just happy "Get Out" is being recognized.

But critics ain't here for the category fraud.

In November, news had been released that the studio was campaigning for the musical/comedy categories, and black moviegoers disagreed with the choice.

While "Get Out" has obvious satirical moments, the flick is still based on the trajectory of horror and dehumanization that black people have faced in America for hundreds of years. It all started with the Atlantic slave trade in the 1600s, up to today's issues with police brutality and a broken criminal justice system.

"Get Out" is not a laughing matter.

But plenty of people have also acknowledged the disparity in horror movies being taken seriously in Hollywood award shows. Heck, even comedy isn't taken as seriously as drama. But the studio felt that "Get Out" would fair better in the comedy categories.

The goal is to get the masterful film nominated as much as possible. But skeptics argue why can't the studio aim to get the film nominated in dramatic categories. Challenging systems is the only way things will change.

But others acknowledge while the film has dark comedy elements, satire is typically comedy too. Jordan is a comedian after all. So, of course, he worked dark comedy and social satire into a serious psychological horror-thriller. "Get Out" is a lot of things, and that's what makes it brilliant.
