Greatest dancing queen of all time: Janet Jackson or Paula Abdul?
Janet Jackson is one of the most groundbreaking, innovative and best-selling artists of all time. She paved the way and influenced many crossover artists who dance—including *NSYNC, Britney Spears, Ciara, Aaliyah, Usher, Mÿa, Justin Timberlake and Beyoncé. Her dance routines for some of her most signature pop hits like "Rhythm Nation" and "If" are considered iconically complex and precise. Everyday people couldn't do these routines in full-Janet glory even if they tried. And many have tried!
Back in the '90s, Janet said she didn't see herself being able to dance and sing later in life. Yet, she continues to sell out arenas at age 52. Her "State of the World Tour" is resuming in summer 2018. Ha! She played us, and continues to snatch wigs with her dance moves 30 years after her breakthrough!
Paula was a highly-respected choreographer in the music business in the '80s, especially after collaborating with Janet during the "Control" era of music. The former "American Idol" judge even appeared in the music video to Janet's breakout hit "What Have You Done for Me Lately." Paula scored a string of pop hits of her in the late '80s and early '90s—including "Straight Up," "Cold Hearted" and "(It's Just) The Way That You Love Me."
Just watch below this legendary performance of Paula performing "(It's Just) The Way That You Love Me" at the 1990 AMAs. She killed it with her versatile, athletic style of choreography!
