Should James Gunn be reinstated to 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3'?

Filmmaker James Gunn was fired as director of "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" after old tweets joking about rape and pedophilia resurfaced. Gunn apologized for his offensive tweets, but his "jokes" cost him his job. But the Guardians—including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista—all stand with Gunn and want him reinstated. Fans are petitioning, too. Bautista has even threatened to quit his role as Drax without Gunn's script. But others argue his jokes are inexcusable, regardless of them happening a long time ago. So, should Gunn be rehired?

The cast of "Guardians" have forgiven Gunn and they are urging fans to forgive him too. They all signed an open letter to reinstate Gunn as the director of "Vol. 3." According to Deadline, below is their shared statement from July 30:

“We fully support James Gunn. We were all shocked by his abrupt firing last week and have intentionally waited these ten days to respond in order to think, pray, listen, and discuss. In that time, we have been encouraged by the outpouring of support from fans and members of the media who wish to see James reinstated as director of Volume 3 as well as discouraged by those so easily duped into believing the many outlandish conspiracy theories surrounding him.”

Fans argue that we have all said or done things we regret. His jokes were offensive, but he should be allowed to grow and learn. At the time of publication, more 370,000 fans have signed the Change.Org petition to rehire Gunn.

Bautista told Shortlist he wants out of "Vol. 3" without Gunn's script:

“Where I’m at right now is that if [Marvel] don’t use that script, then I’m going to ask them to release me from my contract, cut me out or recast me.
“I’d be doing James a disservice if I didn’t.”

Bautista echoed this sentiment on Twitter during the early hours of Monday when he tweeted: “I will do what i’m legally obligated to do but [Guardians] without [James Gunn] is not what I signed up for. GOTG w/o [James Gunn] just isn’t GOTG. It’s also pretty nauseating to work for someone who’d empower a smear campaign by fascists #cybernazis. That’s just how I feel. “

But Disney is now reportedly moving forward with Gunn's script. The Hollywood Reporter's Borys Kit writes:

Some experienced talent reps estimate that due to the unique situation, Gunn could receive a payout of $7 million to $10 million, if not potentially higher. And, more importantly, he would be free to take on another project immediately. Also affecting the negotiations is that Disney plans on using Gunn's script for the third Guardians pic, according to sources.
Disney, Marvel and reps for Gunn declined to comment.
There may be an unexpected twist to the story. Two sources say there is a hope through the talks that Gunn could return in some fashion, even if it’s to develop and direct another Marvel movie. “An end-all verdict hasn’t been issued and conversations with Marvel are still ongoing,” says one source familiar with the proceedings.
That leaves Gunn and his potential suitors waiting to see the outcome of the talks. “Most people feel his comments were coming out of his brand of comedy [at the time he made them],” says another studio exec. “Having an inappropriate sense of humor shouldn’t be a crime.”

But others argue Gunn must deal with the consequences of his past actions.
