Who should be the next James Bond: Tom Hardy or Idris Elba?
Hardy said once before it "would be so cool" to star in a Christopher Nolan-directed Bond movie. But Elba remains a popular fan favorite to play the super-spy. It's been a year since the Tylt has faced off these two contenders, Hardy won with 63 percent of the final vote.
But Elba remains arguably the most campaigned choice on the Internet. Producers, stop toying with our minds and quit throwing new names into contention—like pop-rock superstar and breakout actor Harry Styles. Let's pick someone already! In the meantime, moviegoers have enjoyed debating who should be the next 007. So have once again, who should it be?
Hardy has been rumored to be in contention for 007 for years now. In early 2017, he was coy about the Bond rumors but acknowledged it would be cool to take over the role. Fans are responding with joy to the idea of a Bond movie starring Hardy.
You know, there’s a saying amongst us in the fraternity of acting, and in the fellowship of my peer group, that if you talk about it you’re automatically out of the race. So I can’t possibly comment on that one! If I mention it, it’s gone. But Chris Nolan, what a fantastic director for a Bond movie. Because Daniel [Craig] is so good, and what [Sam] Mendes and Barbara [Broccoli] have done has been so impressive, that it would be a very hard reimagination to follow after. I wonder what the next installment of that franchise would become, and I think when you mention someone like Christopher Nolan, that’s a very powerful figure to bring into that world who could bring something new and create something profound—again.
Moviegoers wholeheartedly believe Elba should be the next 007. With years of fan advocacy, he remains a fan favorite to take on the mantle of Bond, and Elba remains open to the role.
Elba could be the first non-white actor to be Bond, which excites many fans. In addition, many believe he'll uphold Bond's signature style and swagger. Plus, he's darn good actor! But the rumors have been going on for some time, and Elba has acknowledged—in the past—he's hasn't been in actual contention.
In an interview with Jason Guerrasio in early 2017, Elba said he's over the rumors. Elba acknowledged he appreciated the love from fans.
Here's a snippet of the interview:
Guerrasio: I have to bring this up because I want to see it happen: Can you give any update on the James Bond rumors? Have the producers on the film reached out? Elba: Are people still talking about that?Guerrasio: I’m talking about it!Elba: [Laughs] No, man, I don't know anything. Nothing, there's no update whatsoever.
But Elba has refueled some interest in Bond, or at least seeing the filmmakers giving moviegoers something new with the character, even if he's not chosen. He told Variety:
“Are we interested in having a Bond character other than being a male?” Elba asked. “It could be a woman, could be a black woman, could be a white woman, but I think, that character, everybody would like to see it have — do something different with it, why not?”
