Is the live action 'Aladdin' doomed? | The Tylt
Disney finally found its live-action Aladdin and Jasmine after struggling to find fresh-faced actors of color for the upcoming reboot of the 1992 animated classic. While supporters are content with the casting choices, the film is still being criticized for whitewashing the narrative after adding a new white character to the live-action version. Some fans of the original still aren't on board for the reboot. Do you think "Aladdin" is doomed?

Skeptics aren't here for Disney's live-action reboot of "Aladdin." Critics are calling out the studio for going out of its way to whitewash the narrative by including a new major white character. Billy Magnussen will play Prince Anders in the film, a completely unnecessary addition.
This is a film set in the Middle East and fans want it the production to focus on the traditional cast of characters. Others are simply saying that any changes to "Aladdin" from animation to live action are unneeded.
Why did they add a white prince to #Aladdin? This is going to be a disaster 🤦🏻♂️ pic.twitter.com/0Hjrs2FNzT

#aladdin I am so confused to why they add a new white character to a complete story that is set in the Middle East?🤦🏽♀️ pic.twitter.com/71xzOpFXCS

This new character for #aladdin makes me sad to be white, the Aladdin world has no white people sorry but we don't need to be in everything pic.twitter.com/jaj2JWqn6m

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Disney struggled with "finding a male lead in his 20s who can act and sing has proven difficult — especially since the studio wants someone of Middle-Eastern or Indian descent (the animated film is set in the fictional Middle Eastern city of Agrabah)."
But some fans are excited now that Disney cast Will Smith in the role of Genie, some would even argue he's the only one who could come close to filling Robin Williams' shoes. But others are also happy with the decisions to cast rising non-white actors Mena Massoud as Aladdin and Naomi Scott as Jasmine!
