The only shocking thing about Ricky Gervais’s “accusations” was that no one within Hollywood has ever brought this up before. Seriously, no one. And judging from the looks going around the room, it seems that Hollywood didn’t even think that their actions and their words not matching up would make them hypocrites. Cause everyone else sure as heck finds them to be.
How many times have we heard celebrities tout their environmental savviness before seeing them take off on their private jets to some far-off location (some even to the Google climate change summit, no less)? How many times have they schooled us on treating women fairly, only to act like pigs before closed doors? One too many. We salute you, Mr. Gervais—keep fighting the good fight.
In a way, Ricky Gervais trips himself up with presumptions afforded by his own celebrity. He makes the mistake of thinking that people actually care about what celebrities have to say in the first place. Spoiler alert: we don’t.
Think we really the words of someone like Gwyneth Paltrow seriously? Yeah, okay—we’re really going to take the advice of someone who throws words like “conscious uncoupling” around. They’re all jokes; furthermore, they’re all in on the joke, making them no more hypocritical than anyone else out there. They’re just people, at the end of the day. We’re all kind of full of it.
