Hip-hop album of the year: 'Views' or 'The Life of Pablo'?
It's the end of the year! And throughout December, we're facing-off the best songs, albums, movies, TV shows, comic books, video games, sports, pro athletes and entertainers of 2016. The "Best of 2016" is chosen by a combination of popularity, impact, acclaim, rankings and/or amount sold. But ultimately, we want you to let us know who and what from 2016 won the year in each category.
While Kanye and Drake teased and then confirmed a joint project, they are rumored to not be on the best of terms at the moment. Regardless, they both released notable solo hip-hop projects in 2016—but which of their albums is the best?
And don't forget to check out these other end of year debates:
Drake might have won 2016. "Views" garnered him quite a few Grammy nominations—including the top award for Album of the Year. He blended dancehall, pop and R&B in his hip-hop sound. His latest effort is the second best-selling album of 2016 and hence, the top hip-hop/R&Band rap albums of the year. Drake also has hits like "Hotline Bling," "One Dance," "Too Good," "Pop Style" and "Controlla" to solidify all of this.
Kanye West's "The Life of Pablo" might not have any major pop hits. And it's not the best-selling album of 2016. Not even close. BUT it's one of the most critically-acclaimed albums of 2016. And many pop culture "best of 2016" lists rank "The Life of Pablo" above Drake's pop effort.
Hip-hop doesn't have to translate into pop music. And since Yeezy's a tortured, creative genius—many critics and fans lauded his latest effort. The album is ranked on Complex's "Best of 2016" list at #4 and Rolling Stone's list at #2. Critics call "The Life of Pablo" messy and strange, but that's what actually makes it a masterpiece.
