Which is the better Hajime Yatate series: ‘Gundam’ or ‘Cowboy Bebop'?
“Gundam” was thegiant fighting robot franchise before “Transformers” was ever a thing. Created in 1979, the series has gone through various iterations. Of course, the meat of the show is saber-wielding machines. However, its plots delved into many complex social mores.
The first season—“Mobile Suit Gundam”—follows the conflict between forces on Earth and a developing colony in space. It was essentially a war drama involving fantastic weapons. Likewise, the more recent “Gundam Seed” explores how genetically enhanced humans deal with their naturally born counterparts. Michael Bay sure never got that deep.
The epithet most closely associated with “Cowboy Bebop” is “genre-bending.” The one-time series was part space epic, part western noir. Viewers get a taste for this feel right off the bat with its opening credits, which contains one of the greatest themes ever composed.
The story follows a band of bounty hunters getting into various hijinks around the universe. Sometimes it makes you laugh, sometimes it sucker-punches your heart. It’s also widely acclaimed for having one of the most perfect endings to a show. The movie, too, is considered a faithful extension. Here’s to hoping the live action does the beloved anime justice.
