Do the Grammys ignore hip-hop artists for major awards?

This was supposed to be hip-hop's year at the Grammys, but another year, another bust. While hip-hop was nominated across the board, Kendrick Lamar was the only hip-hop artist who walked away with any hardware at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards—and not for any of the major categories. Lauryn Hill won Album of the Year in 1999 and Outkast followed in 2004, but major category wins have been few and far between despite hip-hop's mainstream popularity. What do you think? 🎤🏆

The Grammys are becoming increasingly more diverse in nominees across genres. Just look at who's nominated for Album of the Year last year:

"Lemonade" by Beyoncé
"Views" by Drake"A Sailor's Guide to Earth" by Sturgill Simpson"Purpose" by Justin Bieber"25" by Adele

The Grammys can only nominate five albums a year for the big prize. And this year, nominees are dominated by hip-hop. Jay-Z's "4:44," Childish Gambino's "Awaken, My Love," Kendrick Lamar's "Damn," and Bruno Mar's "24K Magic" are all nominated.

The nominees for Album of the Year are more diverse than ever. This is a good step in the right direction. The Grammys couldn't deny the best of 2017 was hip hop!

While many supporters believe Bruno is deserving of all his recognition, so was Kendrick. Maybe Kendrick and Jay-Z split votes in a stiff competition, but Bruno was regarded as the safe bet for the major awards. The Grammys generally snub most hip-hop albums in major categories... since eternity. 2018 might be an anomaly in regards to nominees, it certainly was the norm in terms of actually winning awards.
