Origin stories are always an important part of a superhero’s mythos. “Gotham” takes a long, dark look at the youthful training and experience of Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) before he becomes Batman, but the show especially shines when exploring the formative moments of his greatest enemies and allies alike. The show skillfully balances absurd camp with comic book action and character development.

What would you do when you find out your parents are supervillains? The obvious answer is in the title. You run away. “Runaways” focuses on a group of teenagers, some with super powers of their own, trying to understand and evade their diabolical parents while navigating relationships and emotional trials. “Runaways” manages to do all this with a large cast of young actors without sacrificing character development and without becoming corny.
