Funniest horror icon: Freddy Krueger or Chucky?
We're pitting eight heavyweight champions of horror against each other all month long, and you decide who wins the grand prize! Don't forget to cast your vote in these other exciting head-to-head brawls:
Freddy Krueger was a child murderer who was burned to death by townsfolk of the fictional Springwood, Ohio. But Freddy would soon get his revenge on the Elm Street mob. He came back as a demonic spirit with extensive nightmarish abilities that allow him to enter the dreams of teenagers and turn those dreams into murderous nightmares. If a kid died in their dream, then they died in reality.
Killing off victims in their sleep reinvented the genre at a time where holiday-theme slashers were popularized by "Halloween" (1978). But then came along Freddy with his hilarious one-liners and creative ways of knocking off the teens of Elm Street. Before Wes Craven's Ghostface, we had Freddy! The director actually based Freddy's unconventional look on a man who peeked through his window as child and scared the crap out of him! He later drew inspiration from stories and studies on people who died in their sleep due to night terrors, and "A Nightmare on Elm Street" (1984) was born! (Thanks a lot, Wes!)
But perhaps no one deserves credit for the role more than stage-actor Robert Englund. Englund's brilliant acting popularized Freddy and made him one of pop culture's most beloved and revered horror icons!
Watch Mojo paid tribute to Freddy Krueger and the "Nightmare on Elm Street" franchise by reviewing Freddy's movie history. Check it out below!
But if Freddy has any competition at being hilarious, scary and creative with killing him victims—it's notorious 'Good Guy' doll Chucky. In fact, Chucky might be more underrated and terrifying than Freddy!
As the "Nightmare" franchise veered into camp territory during the late '80s, "Child's Play" introduced Chucky in 1988 as a killer doll! He's a freaking possessed killer doll! Now that's automatically terrifying.
Chucky's known for the terrifying-yet-subtle question to his child-aged owner: "Hi, I’m Chucky. Wanna play?" (And then offs everyone around that child.) Talk about about being traumatized for life. Poor Andy's childhood! That's exactly what happened in the "Child's Play" franchise. And make no mistake, Chucky enjoys offing folks. He's pretty damn good at it. Hell, Chucky laughs at while offing his own victims because he's that damn funny. And the character trait makes total sense because the doll is possessed by Charles Lee Ray, the Lakeshore Strangler. (Acclaimed actor Brad Dourif not only voices Chucky, but also plays Charles in live-action!)
Chucky topped Watch Mojo's "Top 10 Scary Movie Dolls" because duh, we just proved that he's the most demonic movie doll ever!
Watch Mojo didn't stop there! You don't believe us, then watch Freddy's top 10 kills. No other horror icon has managed to be this scary, creative and hilarious while offing folks.
Ha! Is Freddy creative or just campy? Chucky joked, laughed and tortured the living shit out of his victims. Literally!
Here's Eggimann's list of Chucky at his killing best!
From "You wanna suck face?" before sucking the air out of a victim's lungs; to "Welcome to primetime, bitch!" before shoving a victim's head into a TV; to "How’s this for a wet dream?!" before drowning a lustful victim in a bed of water—Freddy has the best one-liners, clearly! Come @ us! But for more context, check out iHorror's list below!
"Hi, I’m Chucky. Wanna play?" is a scary friggin' line. SCARY! It only gets more vulgar and funny after that.
Horror Freak News collected some of Chucky's best quotes:
Lady in Elevator: Ugly Doll.
Chucky: F**k you.
And this gem:
Chucky: Okay, sport. We’re gonna have a little game of Chucky Says. Chucky says move your ass. Snap out of it! Ya act like ya never seen a dead body before!
Or this one:
Chucky: Just like the good ol’ days. Nothin’ like a good strangulation to get the circulation goin’.
Geesh, Chucky has quite the potty mouth before he kills. Chucky makes Freddy look like a Boy Scout, no?
