Fiona Apple’s debut album “Tidal” garnered solid praise from critics, and she skipped the “sophomore slump” with her second, equally powerful album “When the Pawn…” Since then, she’s followed up with three more, most recently releasing “Fetch the Bolt Cutters.” She’s remained an enigmatic star, clearly never seeking fame and sometimes quite disdainful of it. Instead she focuses on crafting songs that are in turn heartbreaking and clever, full of poetry and wordplay.

Tori Amos also burst onto the scene in the mid 90s, with a string of hits such as “Crucify” and “Cornflake Girl.” Her most recent album is 2017’s “Native Invader,” inspired by both personal and political tragedies. Her style is reminiscent of Kate Bush without being derivative, and her lyrics are deeply personal. She is also an outspoken advocate for survivors of sexual abuse, a subject she brings up in several songs.
