Sudoku is a game that really, really loves the number nine (which seven ate…get it? Teehee). Players scratch their heads over a nine-by-nine grid in which every row should reflect each number one through nine. Sounds simple enough, until you get to doing it. By the end, your brain is exhausted

Sudoku inspires a roller coaster of emotions—cockiness, which then spirals to frustration, which then spirals deeper into hopelessness, then, finally, triumph. It’s one of the most thrilling of the brain games, to be sure. So figure out those squares, and sleep well, friends.

Crossword puzzles are far less constraining than Sudoku, to be sure. This makes them both easier and harder (if that can even be a thing). Players have an unlimited amount of words to choose from against clues, depending on how long or short they are. One wrong word, though, and the whole puzzle is thrown off.

The greatest thing about crossword puzzles is that it expresses just how varied and wonderfully crazy the English language can be. Similar to Scrabble, it reintroduces long-forgotten lingo back to your noggin, and also makes you question the legitimacy of others. It also makes you feel super smart, so there’s always the pride aspect.
