Which Amy Winehouse hit is your go-to karaoke song: 'Rehab' or 'Valerie'?

Eight years ago, the world lost a legend. Only twenty-seven years old, Amy Winehouse’s career had reached explosive heights due to her honest lyrics, gritty lifestyle and, of course, unparalleled vocals. Artists like Adele have listed Amy as their inspiration, and her voice can be heard ringing out of car windows and houses to this day. Many honor the songstress by singing her tunes themselves. Which do you belt out: “Rehab” or “Valerie”?

“Rehab” was the first time Amy received mainstream attention. She had garnered acclaim in England after the release of her first album, “Frank,” which took inspiration from crooning greats such as Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra (to whom the title refers). “Frank” is a lighthearted musing on life and love. Its jazz standard undertones came into full fruition in “Rehab,” which was more of a darkly ironic ballad. Its impact was explosive.

The single remains one of Amy’s most recognizable songs (if not the most recognizable). Her vocal range is relatively simple and slow, making it the perfect karaoke choice for people lacking confidence in their singing abilities.

In retrospect, “Rehab” is tragic. People may honor the songstress most appropriately by humming along with the lyrics, taking the time to bow their heads in reverence of the artist and the demons she battled.

Amy Winehouse wasn’t the first person to perform “Valerie.” That credit goes to The Zutons, whose original single was so admired by Amy she decided to make her own version. Unfortunately for The Zutons, Amy’s “Valerie” stole the show. After her death, Bruno Mars put his own spin on the hit during the 2009 VMAs as a tribute to Amy’s achievements and the everlasting mark she left on music.

“Valerie” is certainly more vocally challenging than “Rehab.” Those singing it in public either have to have a pretty solid pair of pipes themselves or a good buzz going. Either way, it’s a catchy song that’s sure to get the crowd going,

Whether or not you choose to sing it, “Valerie” is a nod to anyone having a bad day, week or year (just ask the real Valerie on whom the song is based on). Whatever hardships you’re facing, you have a friend like Amy to say, “Hey, I’ve been there—take it from me and keep going.”
