Who is Rue's better friend on 'Euphoria': Jules or Lexi? | The Tylt

Who is Rue's better friend on 'Euphoria': Jules or Lexi?

“Euphoria” is an HBO show that puts the raunchy in raunchy. But underneath all the sex, violence, and drugs is more sex, violence and drugs revolving around themes of complicated relationships. The show’s protagonist, Rue (Zendaya Coleman), battles addiction by depending on partner-in-crime and supposed love, Jules (Hunter Schafer). While many view Jules as being Rue’s main supporter and steadfast friend, others point out they’re ignoring someone else that has consistently had Rue’s back—the ever-chill Lexi (Maude Apatow). Who’s the real BFF?

People love Jules. Like, really love her. Actress Hunter Schafer has rightly become a breakout star for portraying a thoroughly realized transgender character in a popular television series. Jules’s backstory takes us through her transition and relationship history, her storyline (and fashion sense) becoming an instant fan favorite.

But it’s clear no one loves Jules more than Rue. She’s stayed mostly sober thanks to the pure verve Jules exudes; that, and the fact she’s absolutely enamored with her. Jules’s positive influence on Rue’s lifestyle kept her clean for over three months, and gave her something other than pills to think about.

This may lead one to think Rue is unfairly substituting drugs with Jules. It's not an entirely wrong assumption, to be sure, and it’s something that both teenagers handle in, well, a teenaged fashion. They’re figuring it all out together as a team, something which can only strengthen their friendship (and possible romance) further.

Rue and Jules (“Rules,” as some are wont to call them) are certainly battling their own personal problems. Between the two of them we've received a beautifully dark relationship, and the bonus of one of the best singles ever

Many question Jules’s loyalty to Rue, especially in light of that season finale. There’s also the fact that Jules’s friendship skills pale in comparison to those of unsung hero, Lexi. Sure, she didn’t get close to enough screen time, but when she did it was an absolute delight. Hopefully that means there's more to come of Lexi in season two.

Since the first episode, Lexi checks to see if Rue’s okay. She sticks up for her when two boneheads make fun of her; makes sure Rue doesn’t get in trouble with her mom; and continues to stick up for her even after Rue treats her poorly. When you consider the lengths that Lexi has gone through to stand by Rue, you realize she’s a real one. Lexi tries to keep Rue out of harmful situation whereas Jules seems to be more self-absorbed. It appears her talents remain in knowing how to wing that eyeshadow just right.

In all the music-video-madness of “Euphoria,” Lexi is a refreshing voice of reason. Although audiences know very little of her background outside of her relationship with others (primarily her alcoholic mother and favored sister, Cassie), it seems like Lexi is the most stable out of all of the show’s cast. To be fair, though, that's not exactly hard considering all the wild personalities crammed into the script.

Sure, Jules is flashy and cool, but she practically primed Rue for a relapse by playing with her emotions and putting her in situations where substances are present (not to mention that whole "you can get medicine anywhere" thing). You can’t imagine a girl that dressed up as Bob Ross for Halloween doing the same, can you?
