"The Marshall Mathers LP" is praised for its dark and introspective lyrical content and Eminem's aggressive flow. The subject matter from the album stirred a lot of controversies because Eminem poked fun at other celebrities, while critics also called out his violent lyrics about women and LGBTQ people. Eminem addressed those controversies. He even performed with gay icon Elton John at the 2001 Grammys.

The LP still sold more than 10 million copies in the United States. The album is certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America.
