From South Korea to the U.K. to America, a fierce new generation of international pop girl groups, pop rock bands and boy bands reigned supreme this decade. One Direction and BTS made boy bandom worldwide phenomenas again in the ’10s. 1D went on hiatus in 2016, but they were the biggest boy band in the world from 2010 until then. Their Directioners remain mobilized to this day. BTS helped make K-pop into an unstoppable global force. The K-pop super-group continues to break barriers and records.
Little Mix and Fifth Harmony broke out in the ’10s, gaining mega hits and amassing mobilized fandoms globally. 5H went on hiatus in 2017, but scored big bops like “Work From Home” and “Worth It” on the Billboard Hot 100 before all of the ladies went solo. LM continues to ooze girl power, releasing five successful LPs and anthems like “Wings” and “Shout Out to My Ex” in the ’10s.
The Chainsmokers ruled EDM, while Twenty One Pilots rocked us with their alternative hip-hop and alternative rock sound. But what both duos share in common is that they are no strangers to Billboard Hot 100 charting success. The Chainsmokers gave us EDM bops like “Don’t Let Me Down” and “Closer,” while TOP scored big with smashes like “Stressed Out” and “Heathens.”
Maroon 5 and Jonas Brothers both left their impact on popular music in the aughts, but the success of both crossover pop-music bands carried into the ’10s. Jonas started off the decade as teen idols before going on hiatus in 2013. They came back in 2019 grown up, sexy and on top of the Billboard Hot 100 with “Sucker.” Maroon 5 started their rise to prominence with “Harder to Breathe” in 2002, but with hits like “Moves Like Jagger,” “Sugar” and “Girls Like You,” they dominated the ’10s.
Imagine Dragons and 5 Seconds of Summer are pop-rock bands who not only broke out in the ’10s, but really topped and carried the genre. 5SOS released rockin’ bops and three chart-topping LPs throughout the decade. Imagine Dragons really brought the “thunder” with their hit of the same name, more bops and four successful albums.
