Favorite Dolly Parton movie: ‘9 to 5’ or ‘Steel Magnolias’?
The movie “9 to 5” condenses the frustrations of the working life into a full 110 minutes starring our Dolly alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. Dolly here plays one of three women who have just absolutely had it with the sexist business practices at their job and, well, kind of take matters into their own hands. It’s as satisfying as it is unrealistic, but hey, we go to movies for the evasion, anyway.
The song “9 to 5” also deals with working your caboose off and sticking to your guns to get your dreams, taking those motifs and expressing them in incredibly relatable lyrics (who here hasn’t “tumbled outta bed”?). So, cheers—here’s to your cup of ambition!
“Steel Magnolias” will make you cry. Don’t think so? Watch it and get back to us (and don’t give us that whole “There’s something in my eye” bit, either). The movie’s all about six southern belles navigating life's ups and downs, Dolly playing the part of a sassy beautician that encourages her friends as much as she dolls them up (see what we did there? Dolly? “Dolls? Whatever, you guys).
Right alongside Dolly is Shirley McLaine as the surly Louisa “Ouiser” Boudreaux, whose balls are perpetually busted by friend Clairee Belcher (Olympia Dukakis). While this scene doesn’t directly involve Dolly, their onscreen relationship gave this exchange, which is probably one of the best moments in cinematic history. You’re welcome.
