There's nothing better than a visually-stunning action film with good storytelling. That's exactly what many film critics are saying about "Skull Island."

Chicago Tribune's Michael Phillips writes:

All well and good, but the news this week is particularly well and good, because director Jordan Vogt-Roberts' "Kong: Skull Island" zips along and treats the Kong mythology seriously without getting balled up in the storytelling. Any movie with the sense, the wit and the visual instincts to introduce Kong the way this one does is fine with me.

Other film critics argue "Skull Island" might be a little better than previous reboots, but the film isn't that good. In fact, they are arguing the film demonstrates the opposite of good storytelling. Detractors say the film is just another mindless action flick serving as an introduction to more mindless action flicks.

CNN's Brian Lowry wrote:

After fairly dutiful remakes in 1976 and 2005, "King Kong" gets a somewhat more creative makeover with "Kong: Skull Island." Yet this attempt to launch a new franchise of creature features suffers from a weak script and uninspired design, yielding a net result closer to "Kong: Numbskull Island."

Ouch! This basically sums up the criticism.

Unpopular opinion, but is "King Kong" (2005 remake) even better? Either way—some moviegoers aren't feeling the "Skull Island" reboot.

Unfortunately, it's all about franchise these days, and some audiences just ain't with that.
