Does 'Dumbo' fall flat or soar?

The highly anticipated live-action version of Tim Burton's "Dumbo" received mixed reviews. Although some fans enjoyed revisiting their childhood and taking their children to see the classic remake, the film took a hit at the box office and critics have a few theories why. Considering the film was originally released in the '40s, some argue it is too dated to compete with remakes like "Beauty and the Beast" that originally debuted in the '90s. Is "Dumbo" a big flop?

Variety noted a few reasons the film may not have soared. One major reason is:

“Titles that are pulled from the much older classic archive such as ‘Dumbo’ — beloved as they are — sometimes have more of an uphill battle versus their more recent counterparts to inspire massive audience enthusiasm,” said Paul Dergarabedian, a senior analyst at Comscore.

But "Dumbo" did bring in a whopping $45 million domestically opening weekend and the film has brought in over $119 million globally (at the time of publication) at the box office. Some fans are excited about Tim Burton's remake.
