"Degrassi: The Next Generation" and "Skins" went there in the aughts. While "The O.C.," and "One Tree Hill" were your standard dramas about teen relationships, "Degrassi" and "Skins" consistently tackled the most controversial topics. "Degrassi" covered every teen issue imaginable—coming out, domestic teen violence, date rape and school shootings. "Skins" was raunchier, exploring teens who grew up amidst dysfunctional parenting and mental illnesses. Which teen drama shocked you the most?

Below is the synopsis of "Degrassi: The Next Generation," per IMDb

The lives of the kids at Degrassi Community School dealing with the serious and sometimes taboo issues that plague teenagers.

Canada's "The Next Generation" is the fourth series in the Degrassi Universe, following "The Kids of Degrassi Street," "Degrassi Junior High" and "Degrassi High," which all three aired between 1979-1991.

The long-running "The Next Generation" premiered in 2001 and ran until 2015. And "The Next Generation" definitely took it up a notch with the teen issues they explored. As the series progressed, it moved past just the awkwardness of growing up as adolescence. "The Next Generation" tackled date rape, teen domestic violence, HIV/Aids and other STDs, coming out, hate crimes, racism, school shootings, suicide, transgender issues and so much more throughout it's long-run on TV.

After "The Next Generation," the Degrassi Universe successfully debuted its fifth series, "Degrassi: The Next Class," airing on Netflix in the U.S.

Below is the synopsis of "Skins," per IMDb.

The story of a group of British teens who are trying to grow up and find love and happiness despite questionable parenting and teachers who more want to be friends (and lovers) rather than authority figures.

U.K.'s "Skins" premiered in 2007, and the raunchy series definitely went there until it ended in 2013. Not only did "Skins" cover some of the same issues as "Degrassi," the series definitely took the dysfunction up a notch. "Skins" explored dysfunctional family life, eating disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, substance and drug abuse, and teenage sexuality on various levels. Whew!

"Skins" was so good in the U.K., that even the U.S. wanted some of that success. MTV premiered a U.S. version of the show, although it was short lived. The success of a dark series like "Skins" just can't be replicated. And here's a bonus—acclaimed actors Nicholas Hoult and Dev Patel had breakout roles on the hit series.
