The world of animated TV shows is so vast and varied that it is nearly impossible to choose the two greatest. I say nearly, because the answer is “Cowboy Bebop” and “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” You got a problem with that? Bite me, fanboy. Just kidding. “Bebop” is cool action, a sci-fi-heavy mix of Hong Kong action films and noir detective stories, while “Avatar” is heartfelt, large and full of personal growth and nuanced social commentary. But which anime is the best?

Both “Cowboy Bebop” and “Avatar: The Last Airbender” will be Netflix live-action shows. We can only hope they will be better than the god-awful atrocity that was “The Last Airbender” live-action film.

“Cowboy Bebop” is easily the most stylish anime. The series has cool jazz, amazing fights, humor and ne’er-do-well heroes: Spike, Jet, Radical Edward, Faye and Ein. Can’t forget the data dog. They shoot through space taking down the bad guys and sometimes, occasionally, making money at it. That “Bebop” has the best music of any anime is beyond question. The animation style is sophisticated and fun. And the voice acting is excellent in both the original Japanese series and English dub, which is plenty rare.

While the animation itself it first-rate, what really sets “Avatar: The Last Airbender” apart is the scope of its character development. A couple of villains stay villainous but everyone else grows. Not just the protagonist. This is especially clear with not only Prince Zuko but also his uncle Iroh, who is perhaps the most thoroughly redeemed character on the show, if not one of the best animated characters of all time. If you’ve seen “Tales of Ba Sing Se,” well…you know how amazing his character is. Stop crying now. Beyond all the serious stuff, it can also be a hilarious show, with great banter from Sokka and Toph, most of all.
