Many fans are pumped to see Howard in the director chair for a "Star Wars" flick. He has two Oscars for Best Director, an eye for good writing, and works well with big corporate studios. He's a much better, steadier fit for a franchise that has basically become its own industry.

Lord and Miller, while beloved in comedic circles, were never a good fit. They wanted to make "Spaceballs," not "Star Wars," and that was never going to fly at Disney. Ron Howard might be able to single-handedly turn this train wreck into box-office gold. Lord and Miller never understood the character of Han Solo, which is kind of a problem when you're making a Han Solo movie:

The creative clash, according to one insider, also came down to differences in understanding the character of Han Solo. “People need to understand that Han Solo is not a comedic personality. He’s sarcastic and selfish,” said that source.

And fans are way more excited about a Ron Howard "Star Wars" movie than a Lord and Miller "Star Wars" movie.

Others see Howard's last-minute hire as an ominous sign of a troubled production. Studios don't just fire directors near the end of filming. That means most of the footage is a train wreck, and nothing can save it. This is also the second "Star Wars" production in recent years where other filmmakers were called in to essentially re-shoot a whole movie (the other being Gareth Edward's torturous time on "Rogue One").

Plus, fans were excited for a creative, fresh new take on Han Solo. Lord and Miller were hired because they excel in taking generic material like "21 Jump Street" and "The LEGO Movie" and turning it into a jolly good time. After two successful, but more grim takes on "Star Wars," this Han Solo movie was the perfect opportunity for the franchise to get out of its comfort zone.

Now, we may never see an original take on George Lucas' beloved universe.

If there was any realistic hope I might have for the future of “Star Wars” in the hands of Disney and Kathleen Kennedy, this latest incident snuffed it out.

Fan are both bummed to see Lord and Miller leave the project, and nervous about Howard coming into the save the day. Yes, he's struck Oscar gold, but he also directed both of "The Da Vinci Code" and its two terrible sequels, two bad Chris Hemsworth movies ("Rush" and "In the Heart of the Sea"), "EDtv" and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas."

Howard has a solid filmography, but he's directed his fair share of stinkers. It's hard to fathom that he can turn bad material around when he hasn't in the past.
