Best song of 1998: ‘The Boy Is Mine’ or ‘...Baby One More Time’?

The late '90s gave us some mega-hits across genres, and two iconic songs turned 20 this year: Brandy and Monica's "The Boy Is Mine" and Britney Spears' "...Baby One More Time." Brandy and Monica funneled their rumored, "untrue" feud into "The Boy Is Mine," and the catchy earworm quickly became the Song of the Summer in 1998. While "...Baby One More Time" really didn't blow up the airwaves until 1999, Britney Spears' signature song jump-started her career as the Princess of Pop in October of 1998. Which single was the best song of 1998?

Brandy and Monica's "The Boy Is Mine" was written as a retort to all the tabloid headlines about the duo's alleged feud, and served as a worthy follow-up to Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney's "The Girl Is Mine." Brandy got the inspiration for the song while watching "The Jerry Springer Show" and immediately thought to add Monica on the track with her. The rest is history.

"The Boy Is Mine" not only became the Song of the Summer, but also the second-most commercially successful song of 1998right behind Next's "Too Close." The hit won the Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals at the 41st Annual Grammy Awards in 1999. Watch the music video below.

While Britney Spears' "...Baby One More Time" blew up in 1999, the song dropped in October of 1998 and marked the beginning of a legendary music career. The song and music video are so iconic that the Britney Army celebrated 20 years of not only the hit, but the 20th anniversary of Britney's grand debut.

"...Baby One More Time" topped the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1999 and the rest is pure nostalgia. Check out the iconic music video below.
