Favorite '80s classic dance flick: 'Footloose' or 'Dirty Dancing'?

Dancing. Some people dread it, others are perpetually shaking it, Kevin Bacon-ing it. Speaking of which (segue!), before Mr. Bacon chased serial killers (and after he got killed for sleeping around), he starred in “Footloose” as a boy trying to dance in a place where it’s been outlawed. Some deem “Footloose” as the classic eighties dance flick, whereas others think it's “Dirty Dancing,” the steamy film that put Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze front-and-center. Which is your favorite?

“Footloose” is the story of a teenage boy that loves to dance who moves to a town where, weirdly enough, dancing has been banned. This is all thanks to a stick-in-the-mud reverend (John Lithgow), whose son was tragically killed in a car crash on the way home from a school shindig. The film features romance, high school rebellion, and a scene where two guys play chicken using tractors because that’s how real men settle things.

People forget how awesome a dancer Kevin Bacon is. Although he didn’t bust out all the moves himself, the ones he did do are very impressive. For someone whose surname defines a cut of stiff meat, Bacon moves as smoothly as a sinewy brook.

Luckily, the reverend finally dislodges whatever was up his pipeline and lets dancing kids be dancing kids. The school dance commences, and, in true eighties fashion, velvet blazers and glitter abound.

“Dirty Dancing” is all about raging hormones coming out in various pelvic ways at summer camp. It has Jennifer Grey—former sister to Ferris Bueller—as the shy Baby, who has no idea how to two-step but is definitely willing to try with Patrick Swayze as her teacher. Can we really blame her? No. No we can’t.

Everyone in “Dirty Dancing” makes dancing look just so damn easy. Although the movie focuses on Grey and Swayze, every other minor character that cha-chas on to the screen inspires audiences to bop around in their seats. It’s pure fun, and makes you see why people like to dance so much in the first place.

A fun game to play while watching “Dirty Dancing” is timing to see how long it takes before you become completely aroused. Trust us, you will. Oh, how you will.
