Madonna and Cyndi Lauper dominated female pop scene in the '80s. Madonna garnered her title as Queen of Pop during the Reagan years, and that's thanks to girl power anthems like "Express Yourself," which quite literally encouraged women (and others) to be themselves. Lauper left her mark on pop music that same decade with hits like "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," an anthem that celebrates girlhood. Which girl power anthem from the '80s should be crowned as the best of all time? 🎤💁🏽

For the past several decades—female artists have declared their independence, dismantled double standards and empowered women with their music. Enter the "Girl Power Anthem." What better way to celebrate Women's History Month than to honor the women in music who influenced feminist movements, and ultimately pick the greatest girl power anthem of all time.

As women of '80s pop music, Cyndi and Madonna made hits just for girls to celebrate being girls. Between "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and "Express Yourself," which song deserves the title of greatest girl power anthem of all time?

Cyndi's "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" is pretty explanatory. Girls are always told how to act, and she fought back with girls should have the freedom to express themselves, celebrate girlhood and have some fun too!

Notable lyrics:

I come home in the morning light
My mother says when you gonna live your life right
Oh mother dear we're not the fortunate ones
And girls they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have fun
The phone rings in the middle of the night
My father yells what you gonna do with your life
Oh daddy dear you know you're still number one
But girls they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have

Madonna is still fighting for sexual freedom and gender equality, and still remains one of the most influential pop music icons of all time. "Express Yourself" is one of her best examples of female empowerment.

Intro Lyrics

Come on girlsDo you believe in love?Cause I got something to say about itAnd it goes something like this

Chorus:

Don't go for second best, baby
Put your love to the test
You know, you know, you've got to
Make him express how he feels
And maybe then you'll know your love is real
