Ashley Williams starts off as a young man who visited a cabin in the woods where his friends had been killed off by the evil dead. Then, he starts to lose his mind... and his hand. (Don't worry, he replaced it with a chainsaw.) Armed with his trusty chainsaw hand and a double-barrel shotgun, the young man becomes the ultimate ass-kicker of the demons.

Empire called Ash the "Dirty Harry of Deadites." The magazine voted Ash as the 25th greatest movie character of all time. Ripley is #5, but we got to admit the one-two combo of chainsaw hand and shotgun makes Ash quite the horror icon.

The tooling-up sequence in Evil Dead II marks the moment where Ash transitions from hapless and hysterical buffoon to the Dirty Harry of Deadites. Campbell’s delivery of the line, “Groovy,” launched a thousand sound bites.

Ripley is the quintessential female horror hero and a fully developed female character who kicks alien ass on the regular.

In "Alien" (1979), Ripley is a warrant officer abroad the spaceship Nostromo on its way back to Earth. An alien creature attacks her spaceship and kills off the crew. She survives, but not before setting the ship to self-destruct.

Ripley continued to lead a war against the Xenomorphs over the course of three more films! Sigourney Weaver garnered an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for "Aliens" back in 1986. Her role was so iconic that it became the first ever performance from a sci-fi film to be nominated for the Academy Award.

John Scalzi wrote that Ripley is the best female character of the sci-fi and horror genre. Here's why:

She's not a sidekick, arm candy, or a damsel to be rescued. Starting with Alien, Ripley was a fully competent member of a crew or ensemble — not always liked and sometimes disrespected, but doing her job all the same.

Here's more of what you need to know about Ripley.
