Having characters from one DC show turn up to play someone else is nothing new. John Wesley Shipp played the Flash in the '90s only to come back as Barry Allen’s father in the Arrowverse. Erica Durance played Lois Lane on "Smallville," and Alura Zor-El, biological mother of the title character on “Supergirl” (and Supergirl’s adopted dad was played by Dean Cain, a former Superman himself). And, of course, the late Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder also showed up on “Smallville.” The list goes on and on. This year’s Arrowverse crossover has fans anxiously awaiting the special guests.

Tyler Hoechlin’s too-infrequent appearances in the Arrowverse have all been great, and he’s a welcome addition to the cast. But it’s the two new-but-not-new Supermen we are talking about today. Arrowverse regular Brandon Routh has played Ray Palmer (A.K.A. the Atom) on "Arrow" and "Legends of Tomorrow" but this time he’s Superman, reprising his role from the 2006 film "Superman Returns." Tom Welling played Clark Kent on "Smallville," which ran for 10 seasons and gained legions of fans. Henry Cavill, the most current silver screen Superman in the DC Extended Universe, is not scheduled to participate, sadly.

As Ray Palmer, the sincere if occasionally corny hero of “Legends of Tomorrow,” Brandon Routh has brought a lot of charm and humor to the goofball ensemble. But in the crossover he won’t be just Ray Palmer, he’ll be Kal-El himself, as he was in the film “Superman Returns.” The film was intended to be an extension of the storyline that began in the Christopher Reeve movies. Superhero films in general have changed a lot since then, with DCEU films in particular becoming darker and darker, while their shows have become better and more fun. The squeaky-clean charisma that Routh brings is far better suited to Arrowverse than the gritty modern film approach, so it should be great fun to see him bring the role back.

Before Hoechlin got the role, fans got fannish over rumors that Tom Welling would be Kara’s cousin on “Supergirl.” Now those fans get a chance at some long-standing wish fulfilment. Welling’s 10 seasons on “Smallville” focused on his life as Clark Kent, going through his formative years in his tiny, bizarre hometown and later, in Metropolis. Only in the very last season is there a glimpse of him in red and blue. The aforementioned Durance will also come back as Lois Lane. Sadly, Michael Rosenbaum of "Smallville"—the best Lex Luthor by far…fight me—passed on reprising the role. Nevertheless, seeing Welling return to the screen as Superman will undoubtably make fans (including the author of this article) squeal with joy.
