Critics say the Switch is simply a new iteration of the Wii U. It's not the innovative new product that people think it is. Worse yet, Nintendo is repeating all of its past sins. It's underpowered compared to its competitors and is overly reliant on the big name brands like Zelda and Mario.

Nintendo did not do the work. They did not rebuilding the bridges of trust with third parties (or design a system able to play larger third party games), if this was the best they could come up with. As such, no matter if they can crank out 2-3 great Nintendo games a year, that’s still all they are, a Nintendo console, which in this market, almost has to be a supplementary unit to an Xbox, a PS4 or a gaming PC. That was a core problem with the Wii U, and this seems like an exact photocopy of that issue now that the scope of the Switch has been revealed.

Others are more hopeful about Nintendo's latest offerings. They think the Switch is innovative and exciting enough to revitalize the Nintendo brand.

In demo gameplay, the whole thing works pretty seamlessly. The heart of the system is the 6.2-inch touchscreen tablet. Slip it into the dock and the TV recognizes the signal after a few seconds. Pull it out, and it immediately shows up on the device for gameplay. The Joy-Controls, meanwhile, slip easily between the sides of the tablet and the Joy-Con Grip. Gameplay directly on the tablet is a bit unwieldy, as anticipated, but it’s definitely useable – assuming, of course, you’re not on, say, a crowded train – that’s more Super Mario Run territory.

All Nintendo needs to do now is to fully take advantage of the hardware and make some games that people really want to play.

The Switch ultimately has a herculean task ahead of it. It must simultaneously serve as the company’s living room and portable consoles, while making up ground lost to the Wii U – arguably its biggest home gaming misfire. Nintendo’s certainly got all the tools in place here for an incredibly versatile and fun offering.
