Most traumatic '90s kids' show: ‘Are You Afraid of the Dark?’ or ‘Goosebumps’?

The relationship between adults and children is a wonderful thing, one in which an innocent being relies on a wiser one for life lessons and exposure to all the world’s beauty. Unless it's the '90s, when all the adults decided to produce a strain of kids’ television shows that traumatized an entire generation. One was “Are You Afraid of the Dark?,” which took campfire stories to a new level. The other was “Goosebumps,” a show that certainly lived up to its name. Which was the scariest?

You ever look back at old children's’ entertainment and think, “Who the hell green-lit this?” “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” falls into that category. The Canadian series focused on the self-named “Midnight Society,” a group of kids that snuck out at night to tell scary stories ‘round a campfire. One episode even featured an impossibly blonde Ryan Gosling, who probably still lives in fear that someone’ll bring that performance up in conversation someday soon. You're welcome, Ryan!

Anyone who grew up as a '90s Nickelodeon fan was most likely banned from watching “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” by their parents because it was “too scary.” Or they had super progressive folks who shrugged and let them make their own decisions, forcing them to deal with the inevitable consequences. Were the two weeks of nightmares worth it? That’s something we’re still trying to figure out.

Some of the top traumatic moments from the show include when nefarious regular, Dr. Vink, unleashes a terrifying vampire upon unsuspecting moviegoers; when an invisible monster drowns a bunch of people in a pool; and also when a bunch of faceless aliens observe a group of kids by forcing them to play with toys. Keep in mind, that’s just the tip of the traumatic iceberg.

When an “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” reboot was announced, people were actually excited. We’ve already gotten through the sleepless nights and fear of shadows; time to give these new kiddies a taste of the old medicine.

R.L. Stine probably hates kids. Not that we blame him, but he didn’t have to pen dozens of stories that scared the Bejeezus out of them (us). Unfortunately for said children (us), R.L. Stine’s novels—“Goosebumps”—were adapted into a Nickelodeon series, filled with nightmarish imagery that haunts them (us) well into their (our) adulthood.

If you were a kid watching “Goosebumps,” you had some serious playground cred. Much like “Are You Afraid of the Dark?”, many parents forbade their kids from watching “Goosebumps” because it was way too frightening, and, quite frankly, they didn’t want to deal with any future therapy payments. But as we all know, the more your parents tell you not to do something, the more likely you are to do it. And away to therapy we went.

Do we really need to rehash the most horrifying “Goosebumps” episodes? Do we really need to talk about that almost outrageously scary dummy, or that one where people get turned into pigs? Is it necessary to recount the plot of that haunted mask? And must we remind Ryan Gosling about his early starring roles yet again? No, we don’t.

You know what, though, these shows are for kids; they can’t scare you any more now that you’re of the legal drinking age. So sleep tight, and don’t let the monster librarians bite!
