Is 'A Star is Born' sexist?

The "A Star is Born" remake starring Lady Gaga has finally arrived after fevered anticipation. The film follows an insecure and struggling artist, played by Gaga, who has dreams of becoming a singer but is unable to make it happen until rock star, played by Bradley Cooper, comes into her life. Some are saying the film reinforces negative stereotypes because Gaga's character doesn't see herself as an artist until she is validated by a man. Fans of Gaga say the tearjerker is one of the best films of the year. Is the film sexist?

According to Independent, the film is trash because we have literally seen it before. Lady Gaga's version is the fourth version of "A Star Is Born." And just like before, the film perpetuates the stereotype that women need men to save them.

In the trailer, Jackson Maine (Cooper) literally pulls a nervous Gaga on stage to sing because apparently there is no way she could have done it without him. She thinks she is ugly until he tells her she is beautiful. Ugh, #OverIt! Independent says:

It doesn’t add anything we haven’t already seen in the Janet Gaynor (1937), Judy Garland (1954) or Barbra Streisand (1976) versions. Worse, Cooper fails to harness Lady Gaga’s greatest quality as a performer, namely her flamboyance and outrageousness. Her character here is disappointingly conventional and even a little bland: a would-be singer in a dead-end job who keeps a picture of Carole King on her wall.

Fans of Lady Gaga say the film is amazing and her performance is stellar. When Gaga and Cooper sing "Shallow" together on stage it will give you chills. Folks are posting videos of themselves leaving the theatre crying because the story is so emotional.
