“Alf layla wa layla” or literally “a thousand and nights and one night” is best known as the “Arabian Nights.” It’s a compilation of fantasy stories spanning India, Persia and Arabic countries, under the frame narrative of the wise and clever Shahrazad, who protects her life by virtue of her storytelling ability and her skill in crafting cliffhanger endings. Aladdin, Sinbad, Ali Baba and others have become instantly recognizable figures worldwide, and Sir Richard Francis Burton’s ribald translation caused a sensation throughout Europe.

"Popol Vuh" is a creation story and compilation of fables and religious tales of the K’iche people, a nation of Maya in what is now Guatemala. The stories are ancient, but the K’iche continue to live in Guatemala and revere "Popol Vuh." Passed down orally until 1550, it contains four books that account for the creation of the world, the adventures of twin heroes Xpiacoc and Xmucane, and the workings of gods, including the creation of human beings from corn. These stories, in addition to being treasured throughout Central America, have influenced authors and artists including Diego Rivera, Werner Herzog, Madeleine L'Engle and more. Listen below for a reading in the K'iche language.
