It’s very telling that those working full-time freelance jobs rose from 17 percent to 28 percent in the last five years. What’s it telling us? Who knows. Regardless, working as a freelancer allows for you to really concentrate on what you want to do. You set the terms for how much you get paid and what projects you take on. What with all the apps and message boards and whatnot, there’s plenty of gigs that can get you financially stable in no time.

Plus, think of all the money you’ll be saving in the interim. Working freelance means having the opportunity to work from home, ergo saving on commuting. Since you’ll be at home, you’ll have more of an opportunity to focus on your health and wellbeing. Maybe you'll even prepare your own lunch and and brew your own coffee instead of dropping dollars at Starbucks each week. You’re truly your own boss, man—screw working for some other Man.

Working the freelance life sounds like a dream, to be sure. But like all dreams, it’s a lifestyle that isn’t quite fully substantial. For one thing, you’re not entirely the length of the time in between gigs, disallowing you from having any sort of financial certainty. Then there’s the issue of health care—although there are plenty of insurance options one could pay for themselves, the expenses pile up. Full-time freelancing is a career choice for the young and the healthy, but how long can one maintain it before being forced to search for full-time?

Filling out les ol’ W-2 form ensures that you have both consistent pay and insurance to boot. Getting up and going to an office also helps instill a sense of purpose in life, and also forces you to wear something other than pajama bottoms. Seriously, when was the last time you washed those?
