This week another Nobel Peace Prize will be announced. This year, two names are being floated as potential recipients—both controversial in their own right. German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who has championed an open-door policy to Syrian refugees, and Edward Snowden, who leaked classified intel that revealed a massive civilian surveillance program run by the NSA. Despite harsh criticism, Merkel is sticking to principles when it comes to letting in refugees. She was a favorite to win the 2015 Peace Prize. To win the Nobel Peace Prize doesn't just mean you're part of history, it means you'll be remembered as being on the right side of it. This will be her year.

Snowden pulled the wool from society's eyes and he did so at great personal risk and peril. He deserves the prize, even if he won't be able to pick it up in person (as he fled to Russia for asylum).

Even in the US, Snowden's revelations have led to political and legal reforms that increasingly makes the official view that he is a traitor seem a little more untenable. But the Snowden leaks remain controversial also in Norway and so he could likely even be arrested if allowed to even pick up the award at the final ceremony.

"Whether you revere or despise Edward Snowden as a person, the cold hard fact is that America is a far better place because of Edward Snowden’s so-called “treason” — even if it was illegal. A certain apoplectic subset of the intellectual lazy seem unable to cope with the notion that an action can be simultaneously “against well-intended laws” and “good” — and yet, this is so, and the Snowden revelations act as a superb object example."
