Which type of transmission is better: Manual or automatic?
For car nerds, manual transmissions are like vinyl records or tube amps. There's just no comparison to their more modern counterparts. They're easier and cheaper to repair, and make driving more fun. Fans prefer manual transmission preference because of a vintage aesthetic, as a Reddit commenter noted:
Really, for me, driving stick is a preference because of the feel alone. If an auto was faster and better in every objective way, I would still want to drive stick. This is why I say that it's a "feel" thing.
Automatic transmission cars are just so much easier to drive. Traffic and hills are easier to navigate, and now automatics get better gas mileage than stick shift cars. Many critics argue manual transmissions are just outdated technology.
Nobody even knows how to drive a stick shift anymore. So car manufacturers don't make them—and that just adds to the lack of demand:
It’s a disgrace,’’ says driving enthusiast and Kelley Blue Book senior analyst Karl Brauer. “Yes, it’s more troublesome and expensive for the automakers. But it’s completely inexcusable that Ferrari doesn’t even offer a manual [transmission].”
I hate that it's rare for people to know how to drive a manual transmission 😒
