"GIF versus JIF" is among the most debated topics in Internet geek history. But maybe now we can finally settle this! How should we pronounce Graphics Interchange Format, AKA "GIF"? While Steve Wilhite, the creator of the GIF, pronounces it "JIF," others reject that pronunciation and prefer to pronounce it with a hard G like... well... the way it's spelled and looks just Like "graphics." You might already know which side you're on, but if you don't, check out the perspectives below and VOTE!

These two guys from Hello Generic went at it over the pronunciation, and presented great arguments on both sides. WATCH, but it's clear the debate rages on!

CNN thought this debate was put to rest three years ago. They made this claim because 23 years after the foundation of the Graphics Interchange Format (created in 1987), Wilhite finally pronounced "GIF" like "JIF" at the 2013 Webbies. Shouldn't the creator of the technology be the one to decide?

But of course, some folks are hardheaded. They pushed back with the trending "GIF" on Twitter.

Furthermore, Gizmodo called out the founder, and flat-out said he's wrong about his own creation. HA!

Wilhite told the NY Times:

“The Oxford English Dictionary accepts both pronunciations,” Mr. Wilhite said. “They are wrong. It is a soft ‘G,’ pronounced ‘jif.’ End of story.”

Gizmodo clapped back with:

"You hear that? They are wrong. He's saying we, the people of America, are wrong. It is a soft 'G', pronounced 'jif'. Sir, why did you not name it JIF like the peanut butter then! End of story. I have long thought the story was over too, but I'm guessing we're reading different books."

Gizmodo furthermore said Wilhite's thinking on how we pronounce acronyms is off. One example: we don't pronounce JPEG as juh-peg, it's jay-peg. Hence, we pronounced "GIF" like it's a "Gift" minus the "t."

But there are some G words that aren't pronounced how they look. They have a soft "G" sound like "giraffe," which is pronounced "jiraffe" or "gin," which is pronounced "jin." GIF is this same way.

But the "JIF" pronunciation makes people think of the peanut butter. Plus, there are MANY more "G" words with the hard G sound. Nice try,  Wilhite!
