Cannabis advocates say the numbers don't lie: alcohol is present in 40 percent of violent crimes committed in America.

But others argue the medicinal benefits of weed are wildly overestimated. According to the American Lung Association, marijuana use can damage the lungs, and smoke from marijuana has been shown to contain many of the same toxins, irritants, and carcinogens as tobacco smoke.

Professor Kent Hutchison from the University of Colorado, Boulder, said his study's conclusions were clear:

"While marijuana may also have some negative consequences, it definitely is nowhere near the negative consequences of alcohol."

But marijuana opponents are adamant that it is simply a dangerous drug. Stuart Gitlow, director of the Annenberg Physician Training Program in Addictive Disease at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, was unequivocal in his critique of cannabis:

"There's no benefit to marijuana," said Gitlow. "It's simply that people want the freedom to be stoned. That's all it is. And there's a great deal of risk."
