Do you want a driver's license?

For generations, getting a driver's license was the epitome of freedom. Once you passed the test, you were just moments away from having the wind whipping through your hair and joining the ranks of adulthood. Now, some teens see obtaining their driver's license as an added burden. Not only is driving a huge responsibility (and stress!), but transportation options are everywhere. Who needs to drive when you can just call an Uber? Do you agree?

According to the Wall Street Journal's Adrienne Roberts, teen interest in driving is no longer a universal truth.

About a quarter of 16-year-olds had a driver’s license in 2017, a sharp decline from nearly half in 1983, according to an analysis of licensing data by transportation researcher Michael Sivak.

Not only do teens have the option of calling a ride as easily as they can check Instagram, but they also have Instagram, and FaceTime, and Snapchat. Teens no longer need to hop in their car to see friends or to escape; they can simply do so on their phone.

Furthermore, teens are more likely to understand the environmental impact of driving around solo than previous generations. And for many, the cost of a license and a car is simply too high. There's no need to prioritize getting a license with these things in mind.

Sure, there may be a drop-off in the number of driver's licenses out there, but that doesn't speak for all teens. Times are changing, and the public's relationships with cars is certainly not immune. But imagine going through your entire young adulthood without the ability to drive. Or the ability to sing in the car without anyone hearing. Or the ability to roll your windows down and feel the wind in your hair.

Driver's licenses will always be part of the experience of growing up. How else would you be able to buy multiple books and start a garden in one day?
