Do you wake up with an alarm clock or phone?

Mornings. A portion of the population wakes up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed—the non-psychotic, don’t. Both types of people, however, rely on outside sources to wake them up. Some depend on old-fashioned alarm clocks, the decades-tested tool in getting people to move as soon as the sun rises. Others opt for their phone, which is not only more modern, but not as hard on the ears. Which do you hit the snooze on?

Alarm clocks are dependable a.m. sentinels. There they stand, staunchly on bedside tables, vigilantly watching you snooze until the break of dawn. Then they ring to attention, loudly screaming, “WAKE UP,” and causing minor heart attacks each day.

Who knows, maybe you gracefully greet your set wake-up time. If you’re normal, though, you most likely begrudgingly hit whatever button turns your alarm clock off, taking a few extra minutes to stare at your ceiling before peeling yourself out of bed.

Alarm clocks are great for the heavy sleepers. Their aggressive sound breaks right through your R.E.M. cycle, bursting apart whatever dreams of dating Chris Evans you had and forcing you back to reality.

Unless you’re a sleeping champion, and you pleasantly stay stuck to your mattress without a care in the world. Make sure Chris pays for dinner.

Where alarm clocks are the sports parents screaming on the sidelines of their five-year-old’s game, phones are the benevolent coach that just want you to have fun, kid. There are so many different noises and tunes to set your phone alarm to, although this by no means makes waking up any easier.

If you have a serious love-hate relationship with your morning wake-up, keep in mind that iPhones and the like are a lot easier to stifle than alarm clocks. Not to mention, you’ll be less tempted to throw your chosen alarm system against the wall since, you know, you’ll be down about a grand afterwards.

However, leaving your phone on all night is a bit sketchy. They’ll manage your time pretty well, but who knows how much they’re recording of your sleepy-time mumblings. Like what you said to Chris over that glass of wine (oh la la!).

Phones are faithful companions no matter the hour, and they will consistently get you up in no time. Unless you hit the snooze button again. And again. And again.
