Should we get rid of unpaid internships?

Although unpaid internships have fallen out of favor with some employers, they are still offered by many. While some appreciate any internship opportunity, whether it be paid or unpaid, others make the point that unpaid internships are largely exploitive, as interns often perform entry-level tasks while also learning on the job. Plus, many students are already under a severe financial burden, and taking up an unpaid internship is not possible. Should all internships be paid?

As Laura Franta-Abdalla explained via Mic in 2014, college students should not have to work for "free" in order to get their foot in the door of a certain business or industry.

And according to BestColleges, while paid internships often lead to future job opportunities, unpaid internships do not compare. BestCollege's Mikael Mulugeta points out that "the difference in employment rates for students with unpaid internships and those with no internship experience is minimal." Students should not have to make the choice between fair wages and needed work experience:

Unpaid internships are a luxury that only economically advantaged students can afford. While students from lower-income families might have to work throughout college to afford tuition, often in positions unrelated to their fields of study, affluent students are free to pursue career-advancing opportunities without needing to be paid.

Even so, some would rather take an unpaid internship opportunity than none whatsoever. Plus, some industries are more likely than others to offer unpaid internships rather than paid. According MoneyUnder30's Zina Kumok:

Unpaid internships remain a viable option for employers because for many students, it’s the only chance to get work experience before they graduate. Paid internships are rare in fields like journalism, entertainment, art, and fashion. Getting an internship is the only inroad for many students without a personal tie to the industry.
