Is 16 too old to go trick-or-treating?

Tick-or-treating is one of the best parts about being a kid. You get to dress up as your favorite movie characters, monsters or heroes, walk around your block late into the night, and have other adults practically throw candy at you. But some say there is a cut-off age for such frivolity, arguing kids over the age of 16 should refrain from trick-or-treating. But plenty of teens and adults want to partake in the festivities, seeing no problem in joining the fun. What do you think?

Per at least one etiquette expert, there is no cut-off age for trick-or-treating. According to TODAY's Rachel Paula Abrahamson, the topic of age and Halloween makes expert and author Catherine Newman "roll her eyes a teeny bit."

“If a 17-year-old wants to dress up with their friends and trade candy at the end of the night, I think that’s great,” Newman told TODAY Parents. "Little kids die of happiness when they see big kids dressed up. It validates their excitement."

As long as older kids are polite and respectful of the young kids out there, there's no problem in older teens continuing their own Halloween traditions.

One town in Canada feels so strongly about this question, it banned anyone older than the age of 16 from trick-or-treating. Per Time's Mahita Gajanan:, the town:

...has drawn a hard line with a bylaw announced in September that bans anyone older than 16 from trick-or-treating and hits any rule-breakers with a $200 fine.

For some, trick-or-treating is only fun when it's reserved for the younger kids. Otherwise, innocent fun could turn dangerous.

Some kids themselves are self-conscious about trick-or-treating beyond a certain age. If you've done something since diapers, should you still be doing it by the time you hit 16? Some say no.

There's no need to bring the Scrooge-spirit to Halloween. Spooky season is a time for everyone to participate in the fun, no matter your age. If that means trick-or-treating for you, don't let someone else—or a fine—stop you!
