Should we ditch bras?

Natural looks are gaining mainstream momentum, but when it comes to freeing your breasts to flop and flare as they see fit, people have mixed feelings. Some ditch their bra in an act of liberation; one's breasts were never made to be caged. Others appreciate bras for their support and would prefer to leave them on. What do you think?

For many, going without a bra feels extremely freeing. As Teen Vogue puts it:

While the choice may seem simple, the reality is it’s one inextricably linked to not only fashion, but also women’s history, rights, sexuality, and health.

For those who choose to go without a bra, comfort increases without wires undercutting their chest. Teen Vogue's Emma Sarran Webster refers to Laura Tempesta, a bra expert with a masters degree in lingerie design, on the subject:

We’re at the point, Tempesta says, where “women no longer want to put up with the discomfort of wearing a bra and are challenging the cultural mores which dictate their breasts must be covered up and restricted.”

Research shows wearing a bra can impact one's physiology in the form of causing breasts to sag, but for many, bras are necessary in order to prevent pain. Bustle's Maxine Builder writes

For all of the bad rep that bras have gotten these days, there are some women who still do prefer wearing them. Yes, women with large boobs can go braless, but some experience discomfort from letting it all hang out. For women with especially large breasts, wearing a supportive bra can mean the difference between feeling back pain or not.

For some, wearing a bra simply increases confidence. Whether it's a barely-there lacy bra, a push-up bra, or a sports bra, if it makes you feel powerful, you're doing something right.
