Is it 'dressing' or 'stuffing'?

This classic Thanksgiving dish goes by different names. Some say the nomenclature depends on how you actually use the dish. If you stuff it inside the turkey, it's stuffing, but if you put it around the turkey, it's dressing. Others argue the purpose of the bread-sausage-veggie combo has nothing to do with its title; it simply is called one thing or the other. So which is it: dressing or stuffing?

The typical recipe for this Thanksgiving staple includes some kind of bread, veggies and herbs, and it is usually held together by an egg or broth. Even Wikipedia plays it safe by implying "stuffing" and "dressing" are interchangeable when referring to this dish:

Stuffing, filling, or dressing is an edible mixture, normally consisting primarily of small cut-up pieces of bread or a similar starch and served as a side dish or used to fill a cavity in another food item while cooking.

For some people, it doesn't matter what purpose the dish fulfills. Whether it goes inside the bird or beside it, it's still "dressing." As Michelle Darrisaw writes for Food and Wine:

I can tell you it was always called dressing in my household in Georgia–cornbread dressing with an egg gravy to be more exact. No matter how many times I see Kraft’s Stove Top Stuffing Mix on the shelves, you’ll never convince me it’s anything other than dressing.

Whether it's in the bird, on top of it, or in a separate dish, it remains "dressing."

Others say if it goes in a turkey, it's stuffing—plain and simple. The whole point of the dish is to infuse flavor into the turkey, and as long as you're following food safety guidelines, why wouldn't you follow tradition, both in name and in practice? According to Butterball itself, stuffing a turkey doesn't have to be complicated, but it will be delicious.
