We’re sure that each type of medium has been treated as taboo throughout history; listening to music while doing something was probably snorted upon at one point (“Why are you listening to that Victrola whilst typing, Baltus? Twill muddle your mind!”). Then what happens? People realize productivity stays exactly the same, and the previously guilty medium becomes an aid in work as opposed to a deterrent.
If someone’s streaming their favorite show at work but still doing their job effectively, who cares? Let them be and let them stream, man. And give them a few show recommendations while you’re at it.
There’s work and there’s play. Mixing the two, especially if it’s constant, verges on the irresponsible. No matter what your job is, watching shows when you’re on the clock is a blatant abuse of company time. Moreover, it most certainly depreciates the quality of your work. Imagine if a surgeon decided to stream “Arrested Development” while he or she was working? Yeah—prognosis not good, doctor.
If you can’t not give into temptation, at least try to parse it out. Or just hit pause every once in a while.
