Animal rights activists say there's no real justification for wearing fur. Killing animals for the sake of a person's vanity is barbaric. Animals raised on fur farms often live in cramped cages all their lives and are slaughtered via cruel methods like electrocution or gassing. Trapped animals hardly fare better. Traps are often inefficient at killing animals and leave animals to die slow deaths.

There's simply no justification for killing animals to satisfy someone's vanity.

Even as an angry teen I could see the complexity of some animal rights issues. Vivisection was sometimes used to save human lives. Nutrients can be gained by eating meat. But fur? Fur seemed a no-brainer. Why should animals die to produce a ridiculous-looking coat? If you’d have told me back then that we’d still be discussing this three decades on, I wouldn’t have believed you. Surely the industry would have been eradicated?

Others say the fuss being made about fur is incredibly hypocritical. Society is fundamentally okay with eating meat. Animals are often not treated well in that industry, but you don't see PETA throwing paint on supermarket shoppers. People are okay with wearing leather in shoes and clothing too. Furs are no different.

Fur has a long history in fashion. It is a luxury product but that doesn't automatically make it wrong. Lady Gaga defended her choice of wearing furs, saying:

I am choosing not to comment on whether or not the furs I purchase are faux fur-pile or real because I would think it hypercritical not to acknowledge the python, ostrich, cow hide, leather, lamb, alligator, “kermit” and not to mention meat, that I have already worn. This should already put me in a category as one who appreciates and adores the beauty of animals in fashion, but am not a strict vegan. I have truly always stayed away from skinned fur, especially i have never been able to afford a nice one, but this does not mean my morals are rigid and that I won’t bend at the sight of an absolute art piece of a coat. I have no chains about this. You see a carcass, I see a museum pièce de résistance.
